Why does scalp sun damage happen?
The scalp, like any exposed skin, is vulnerable to sun damage from continued UV exposure. Over time, this can lead to noticeable changes such as discoloration, thinning skin, increased wrinkles, and the development of skin lesions — some of which may be benign, while others can be precancerous or cancerous. It’s important to note that even small, everyday exposures — like walking to the mailbox or driving with the sunroof open — accumulate over time and contribute to this damage.
How can you prevent scalp pigmentation?
Protecting the scalp from daily sun exposure is essential for preventing pigmentation and long-term skin damage. The simplest and most effective method is wearing a hat—ideally, a wide-brimmed hat, which offers better coverage not only for the scalp but also for the cheeks and lower face.
If wearing a hat isn’t an option, apply a medical-grade, mineral-based sunscreen to the scalp and reapply every two hours for continued protection. In addition, using a topical Vitamin C serum can enhance your skin’s defense against sun damage.
Hair naturally provides some degree of sun protection for the scalp. However, if hair is thinning and exposing more skin, targeted treatments can help restore coverage and reduce exposure. Options include PRP (platelet-rich plasma) scalp injections, prescription-strength and medical-grade topical treatments, and oral supplements designed to improve hair density and quality.

What treatments are available for scalp sun damage?
According to PA-C Corynn Newman, one of the most effective treatments for scalp sun damage is the Fraxel Dual Laser (1927nm). This non-invasive laser targets brown discoloration, helps reduce precancerous lesions, and enhances the overall texture and appearance of the skin. For optimal results, it is often combined with the Alexandrite Laser, which complements its effects.
Most patients benefit from a series of 2–3 initial treatments, spaced 4–6 weeks apart, followed by annual maintenance sessions to preserve results and continue protecting the skin.
Will treatment help white spots on the scalp?
White spots on the scalp, known as idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis (IGH), are a common result of chronic sun damage. Unfortunately, these spots do not typically respond to treatment and cannot be reversed. However, by improving the surrounding sun-damaged skin — particularly reducing brown discoloration — we can significantly minimize the contrast, making the white spots far less noticeable.
