You’ve just welcomed your baby – life is full of new routines, sleepless nights, and moments of joy. But a few months after giving birth, you might notice something surprising: more hair in your brush or shower drain than usual. It can feel worrying, but rest assured, postpartum hair loss is both common and temporary.

In this blog, Aesthetic Solutions dermatologist Dr. Payvand Kamrani reviews why postpartum hair shedding happens, how long it lasts, and the most effective ways to support healthy hair regrowth while your body adjusts after pregnancy.

What Is Postpartum Hair Loss?

Postpartum hair shedding, also called postpartum telogen effluvium, is a common and temporary condition where women notice more hair falling out than usual after having a baby. It can affect up to 50% of women!

This usually starts about 2 to 5 months after childbirth and can last for several months, but most women see their hair return to normal within a year. The hair loss is usually spread out over the scalp and does not cause bald spots. It’s important to know that this type of shedding is different from genetic hair loss and does not cause permanent thinning.

What Causes Postpartum Hair Loss?

During pregnancy, higher hormone levels of estrogen keep hair in a growing phase, so many women notice thicker hair. This is why many pregnant women notice that their hair is longer and thicker. After delivery, hormone levels drop quickly, causing more hairs to enter the telogen (shedding phase) at the same time. This sudden shift leads to noticeable hair thinning a few months after delivery.

Overcoming Hair Loss: Our Process

The appointments start with a detailed history and physical exam to rule out other cases of hair loss which can include thyroid disease, iron deficiency, and others. Fortunately, postpartum telogen effluvium is diagnosed clinically so biopsies are not necessary. We will discuss the diagnosis and the expected timeline of when to start noticing hair regrowth. We will come up with a treatment plan if necessary, which may have to wait based on if you are breastfeeding.

Treatment Options for Postpartum Hair Shedding

Postpartum shedding can be emotionally frustrating, but it’s a sign your body is returning to its pre-pregnancy state. The good news: regrowth almost always follows.

The majority of cases resolve on their own in 12 months. Iron supplementation may help if you have an iron deficiency following childbirth. Treatment options, including minoxidil and PRP can focus on growing the existing hair thicker and growing the new hairs faster. ScalpStim is an Aesthetic Solutions exclusive procedure that helps both hair density and hair quality.

“Postpartum shedding is self-limited, meaning treatment is not necessary because it will resolve with time. However, if treatment is offered, it depends on several factors, including whether you are breastfeeding.” – Dr. Payvand Kamrani

Lifestyle Tips for Hair Health

  • Gentle Hair Care: this includes avoiding daily use to heat styling tools such as straighteners or curling irons, harsh chemical treatments or tight hairstyles.
  • A Balanced Diet: Ensure you are getting enough iron, vitamin D in your diet but avoid over-supplementation if you are not deficient.
  • Stress Management: Postpartum hair loss can add to the stress and anxiety of being a new mom but try to focus on rest and taking care of yourself.

Postpartum hair shedding is a natural part of your body’s recovery after pregnancy, and with time, most women see their hair return to its normal fullness. Understanding the process and caring for your scalp and overall health can make this transition smoother and less stressful.
