While the term “permanent” is used, the pigment can fade and shift over time due to factors like sun exposure, skin cell turnover, and the type of ink used. Some inks may also change color as they break down, resulting in hues that no longer match the patient’s desired look.

The gold standard for permanent eyeliner removal is the picosecond (pico) laser. Pico lasers deliver ultra-short bursts of energy, measured in trillionths of a second, that break down tattoo pigment into very small particles the body can then naturally clear through its immune system. Compared to older laser technologies, pico lasers are highly effective at shattering pigment with fewer sessions and less thermal damage to surrounding tissue, which is especially important in a sensitive area like the eyelids. What to Expect During Treatment:

After the session, mild swelling, redness, and tenderness around the eyelids are common and usually subside within a few days. Patients are typically advised to avoid eye makeup, rubbing the area, and direct sun exposure during the healing period. Multiple sessions are usually required, spaced several weeks apart, to allow the body time to process and clear the fragmented pigment between treatments. The color may shift to a reddish orange during the treatment session. The total number of sessions depends on factors such as the type and depth of the pigment, the colors used, and how the skin responds.
