For LED therapy in particular, the technology relies on low level light, which is distinct from lasers and other energy-based devices that may be utilized in an office setting. LED therapy acts on the photoreceptors on the mitochondria of our skin cells which interact with this low level light to lead to chemical changes which can contribute to favorable skin outcomes. LED Light Therapy devices can come in many different wavelengths, with the most common devices utilizing visible light spectrum ranges such as red light or blue light. Newer devices may have other wavelengths of light, such as green or yellow.
Most Common Indications Explained: Red Light and Blue Light
Red Light:
Red light is the most commonly available “at-home” LED due to its wide ranges of uses. It has been shown to stimulate collagen production and have an anti-inflammatory effect, which is helpful in conditions such as acne and rosacea. It also has been shown to help with certain types of hair loss. An in-office red-light therapy may occasionally be used as a component for photodynamic therapy, where a photosensitizing medication is applied to the skin before being illuminated by the red light.
Blue Light:
Blue light LED has been shown to help with acne and fibroblast remodeling which could potentially play a role in scar reduction. Blue light has been long used in photodynamic therapy for pre-skin cancers (actinic keratoses), where a photosensitizing medication is applied to the skin before being illuminated by the blue light.
Do LED Light Masks Produce Real Results?
YES! However, it is important to note that not all at-home LED lights equal. Dose and delivery mechanisms matter!
