In the evolving landscape of aesthetic dermatology, light-based treatments have become popular tools for addressing sun damage, pigmentation irregularities, and vascular lesions. Among these, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and BroadBand Light (BBL) are two of the most commonly used technologies. While they share similarities, they are not identical. In this blog PA-C Garrett breaks down the differences to help you determine which treatment, if either, is right for your skin goals.
What is IPL?
Intense Pulsed Light is a non-invasive treatment that uses a high-intensity light source to target pigmentation and vascular irregularities in the skin. While often referred to as a “laser,” IPL is technically not actually a laser. It emits a broad spectrum of light filtered to wavelengths that are focused on specific chromophores – primarily hemoglobin (for redness) and melanin (for brown spots).
IPL is best known for its ability to address superficial skin concerns such as sun-induced pigmentation and redness.
How is BBL Different?
BroadBand Light is essentially a next-generation version of IPL. Developed by Sciton, it uses dual light filters and advanced cooling, which allows for better customization and a more comfortable treatment experience. While both IPL and BBL use light to target pigment and redness, BBL tends to be more versatile and precise. We also find that these enhancements give BBL a better safety profile opposed to traditional IPL devices.
What Can These Devices Treat?
IPL and BBL are effective for treating:
- Sun damage (solar lentigines, freckles)
- Uneven pigmentation
- Facial vessels and general redness
- Angiomas and certain vascular lesions
One of our favorite treatment combinations is to pair BBL with same day Clear + Brilliant. This provides a multi-modality approach to treating tone and texture with minimal downtime.
When To Consider Alternate Options
Though many light-based devices claim to treat a wide range of concerns, IPL and BBL may not always be the safest, most effective options. For example, IPL and BBL are commonly promoted as anti-aging treatments. The idea is that regular treatments with these devices can help keep skin looking clearer and more even over time by supporting healthy cell turnover and stimulating collagen. In our practice, we find these claims to be overstated. When skin texture (i.e., fine lines) or collagen stimulation is the main concern, we typically recommend more targeted technologies such as traditional resurfacing lasers, microneedling, ultrasound, or radiofrequency devices.
IPL and BBL are also often marketed as a treatment for hair reduction. While both IPL and BBL can cause permanent damage to hair follicles (thus leading to long-term hair reduction,) these devices are generally not the most efficient options and carry a higher risk of complication for some skin types. Dedicated diode or Alexandrite laser systems are more powerful, precise, and effective for this purpose.
IPL and BBL Risks and Contraindications
As with any light-based therapy, safety and patient selection are paramount. These treatments are not suitable for everyone. Key contraindications include:
- Actively tanned skin, including recent use of self-tanning products
- Use of photosensitizing medications (e.g., doxycycline, minocycline)
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Active skin infection, inflammation, or open lesions in the treatment area
- Use of isotretinoin (Accutane) within the past month
- Certain skin types due to increased risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or burns
While the most common adverse effects are redness or swelling, improper technique or poor patient selection can lead to more serious complications, such as pigmentary changes or burns. This is why treatment should always be administered by trained professionals under clinical supervision. IPL or BBL for Dark Skin Tones
We do not recommend IPL/BBL for darker skin types (Fitzpatrick IV and above). Since the wavelengths utilized are attracted to melanin, skin types with higher concentrations of melanin are at a higher risk for complications with this treatment. A great alternative for skin of color is the PicoSure Pro or Clear and Brilliant.
