Sclerotherapy for the Hands:
Sclerotherapy is an injectable treatment in which a solution is injected directly into the veins of the hand. This “sclerosant” disrupts the vessel wall, causing the vein to collapse and shrink with time. Sclerotherapy is reserved for those whose hands have been optimized in terms of skin quality and volume. Patients who require routine bloodwork or vessel access for IV medications are not candidates for this treatment.
Dermal Fillers for the Hands:
Both hyaluronic acid-based fillers (HA fillers) and biostimulatory fillers (Radiesse) can be used for volume support of the hands. This is typically my first line treatment, as revolumizing the hands oftentimes restores the natural contour and camouflages the visible veins. Patients who are noticing that the tendons on the backs of their hands are becoming more prominent or looking “bony” are great candidates. This typically requires a series of treatments for optimal results.
Lasers for the Hands:
Many different lasers or even a combination of lasers can be used to restore healthy skin quality of the hands. We can use Q-switched Alexandrite or the PicoSure Pro laser to target individual brown spots and the Fraxel or Clear & Brilliant lasers to achieve overall skin resurfacing and collagen production. The backs of the hands are a common area that accumulates sun damage with time, causing brown spots and skin crepiness. These changes cause the hands to appear older, and the loss of the supple skin on the backs of the hands can accentuate the appearance of veins. Patients who have noticed a “tissue paper” look of the skin on the backs of the hands, brown spots on the backs of the hands, and skin that stays tented up when pinched are all good candidates for lasers for the hands.
