Venous Lakes

Area of Concern

01

What Are Venous Lakes?

A venous lake is a common, benign vascular lesion that appears as a soft, compressible, dark blue to purple spot on the skin. They most frequently develop on sun exposed areas such as the lips, ears, or face. Venous lakes are composed of dilated blood vessels and are medically harmless, though some patients may seek treatment for cosmetic reasons or occasional bleeding.

What Causes a Venous Lake?

Venous lakes develop as a result of gradual vascular and skin changes that occur with aging and cumulative sun exposure. Over time, weakening of the vessel walls and loss of surrounding skin support allow superficial veins to dilate and become more visible. These lesions are benign and common, particularly in areas exposed to long term environmental stressors.

Treating venous Lakes at Aesthetic Solutions

Treatment of venous lakes is typically performed for cosmetic reasons or if the lesion is prone to irritation or bleeding. Therapy focuses on selectively targeting the dilated blood vessels without damaging the surrounding skin. The GentleYAG laser is commonly used for this purpose, as its wavelength is well suited for safely treating vascular lesions. Treatment is generally quick and well tolerated, with the specific approach guided by the size and location of the venous lake.
