Area of Concern

01

What is TMJ?

TMJ refers to dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint, which connects the jaw to the skull and allows for movement during speaking, chewing, and facial expression. When this joint or the surrounding muscles become irritated or overactive, it can lead to symptoms such as jaw pain, tension, clicking, or limited movement. TMJ disorders are common and can range from mild discomfort to more persistent symptoms.

What Causes TMJ?

TMJ symptoms often develop from a combination of muscle overactivity and joint irritation. Clenching, grinding, and stress related tension can place excessive strain on the muscles that control jaw movement, particularly the masseter and pterygoid muscles. Over time, this can lead to discomfort, tightness, and dysfunction of the joint. Additional factors such as bite alignment and prior injury may also contribute to symptom development.

Treating TMJ at Aesthetic Solutions

Many patients begin with conservative measures such as night guards or other dental interventions, and we often work in collaboration with dental providers as part of a comprehensive approach. Treatment for TMJ at our office focuses on reducing muscle overactivity and relieving tension in the jaw.

Neuromodulators such as Botox may be used to relax the masseter and pterygoid muscles, helping to decrease clenching forces and improve overall comfort. By reducing excessive muscle activity, treatment can alleviate symptoms such as jaw pain, tightness, and tension related headaches. Treatment plans are individualized based on symptom severity, muscle activity, and patient goals.
