What is Poikiloderma?

Poikiloderma refers to a pattern of skin changes characterized by redness, pigmentation changes, and thinning of the skin. It most commonly appears on the sides of the neck and upper chest while often sparing the area under the chin. The condition develops gradually and gives the skin a mottled appearance with a mix of redness and brown discoloration. Although medically harmless, poikiloderma is a common cosmetic concern because it affects skin tone and texture in highly visible areas.

What Causes Poikiloderma?

Poikiloderma develops from long term sun damage that affects both the blood vessels and pigment producing cells within the skin. These combined changes create the characteristic pattern of redness and discoloration most commonly seen on the neck and chest.

Treating Poikiloderma at Aesthetic Solutions

Treatment for poikiloderma focuses on improving both the vascular redness and uneven pigmentation that contribute to its appearance. Vascular lasers, such as V-beam, are often used to target the visible blood vessels and reduce persistent redness. In some cases, lasers such as the Fraxel Dual may be used to address pigmentation, stimulate collagen and improve overall skin tone.

Because poikiloderma results from cumulative sun exposure, ongoing sun protection is an important part of maintaining results.
