Treatment of permanent makeup removal is tailored to the type of cosmetic tattoo, the pigment color, and the area being treated. Lasers are used to break down the tattoo pigment so it can gradually be cleared by the body.

Depending on the characteristics of the pigment and skin, different devices may be selected, including Q switched Nd:YAG lasers, Q switched Alexandrite lasers, or picosecond lasers.
