What is Keratosis Pilaris?

Keratosis pilaris is a common skin condition that appears as small, rough bumps on the skin, often described as having a “chicken skin” texture. About 50% to 80% of teenagers and 40% of adults will develop these bumps at some point during their lives! These bumps most frequently develop on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks.

What Causes Keratosis Pilaris?

Keratosis pilaris develops when keratin, a protective skin protein, accumulates and plugs the opening of hair follicles. This leads to the formation of small, rough bumps on the skin’s surface. Genetics and skin type play a significant role, and the condition often becomes more noticeable in individuals with dry skin or certain underlying skin conditions.
