A gummy smile occurs when an excessive amount of gum tissue is visible when smiling. While the ideal amount varies between individuals, a gummy smile is generally described as showing more than a few millimeters of gum above the upper teeth. This condition is medically harmless but can affect overall smile balance and is a common cosmetic concern for some patients.
A gummy smile can develop from a combination of muscular, dental, and skeletal factors. In many individuals, overactive upper lip muscles elevate the lip higher during smiling, revealing more gum tissue. In other cases, excess gum tissue, tooth proportions, or underlying facial anatomy may contribute to the appearance.
Treatment of a gummy smile depends on the underlying cause and the degree of gum exposure. When overactive upper lip muscles are the primary contributor, neuromodulators may be used to gently relax the muscles that elevate the lip, helping reduce gum show when smiling.
