Dermatosis papulosa nigra (DPN) is a common, benign skin condition characterized by small, dark brown to black raised bumps that typically appear on the face, neck, and upper body. These lesions are a form of seborrheic keratosis and are most commonly seen in individuals with darker skin tones. DPN lesions are harmless but may increase in number over time and are often a cosmetic concern.
DPN develops primarily due to genetic factors and is more commonly seen in individuals with darker skin types. Over time, these benign growths increase in number as part of the natural aging process. While the exact mechanism is not fully understood, they represent a harmless overgrowth of skin cells rather than a disease process.
