Coup de sabre is a rare form of localized scleroderma that appears as a linear, indented groove on the forehead or scalp. The name, meaning “strike of the sword,” refers to its characteristic appearance. The affected area may show skin thinning, discoloration, and, in some cases, hair loss along the involved region. While uncommon, affecting fewer than 3 in 100,000 people, it can impact both the skin and underlying tissues.
Coup de sabre is believed to result from an autoimmune process that leads to inflammation and abnormal collagen deposition in the skin and underlying tissues. This can cause thinning, tightening, and indentation along a linear pattern.
While the exact cause is not fully understood, a combination of immune, genetic, and environmental factors is thought to contribute to its development.
