Acnitic Keratosis (Precancers)

Area of Concern

01

What is Actinic Keratosis?

Actinic keratosis is a common precancerous skin condition that presents as rough, scaly patches on sun exposed areas such as the face, scalp, ears, and hands. These spots (commonly referred to as AKs) may feel dry or gritty and can vary in color from skin toned to red or brown. While not all lesions progress, actinic keratoses have the potential to develop into skin cancer over time, which is why they warrant evaluation and treatment.

02

What Causes Actinic Keratosis?

Actinic keratoses develop as a result of long term sun exposure and cumulative ultraviolet damage to the skin. Over time, this damage alters normal skin cell growth, leading to the formation of rough, precancerous lesions. Individuals with lighter skin types and a history of significant sun exposure are at higher risk. Because these lesions reflect underlying cellular damage, early identification and treatment are important.

Treating actinic keratosis at Aesthetic Solutions

Treatment of Actinic Keratosis (AKs) focuses on removing or destroying abnormal precancerous cells while improving overall skin health. Our go-to treatment for AK’s is the Fraxel Dual. Fraxel Dual laser is an FDA approved option for the treatment of Actinic Keratoses, working by targeting damaged skin and stimulating the replacement of healthier cells. More traditional general dermatology methods, like liquid nitrogen, curettage, or topical prescriptions may also be utilized.

In addition to treating already formed lesions, studies suggest that routine treatment with fractional resurfacing lasers may help reduce the risk of future skin cancers by addressing underlying sun damage. Treatment is tailored based on the number and location of lesions, and ongoing sun protection remains essential to help prevent new precancerous changes.
