What is Ultherapy?
How does it work?
Ultherapy administers focused ultrasound energy to the treatment area. The sound energy passes through the superficial layers of the skin to target the deeper, foundational area where collagen production occurs. Here, the sound energy triggers a process called neocollagenesis, the increased production of new collagen. Over time, this increase produces a noticeably rejuvenated, uplifted look.
What kind of results can I expect?
Ultherapy is approved to produce a lifted look in the brow, jaw line, and under the chin. Ultherapy addresses mild to moderate loose or sagging skin on the face and neck. By triggering an increase in collagen production, Ultherapy lifts the brow, which in turn reduces excess skin on the lids, opens up the eyes, and gives a more refreshed overall look. Ultherapy is also used to lift and tighten sagging skin on the neck and under the chin, addressing the “turkey gobbler” and “double chin.” It is also approved to treat wrinkles and fine lines on the neck and chest, or décolletage. You may see some results immediately after treatment, but the true outcome will develop over two to three months, as the increased collagen production improves tone, tightness and texture.
How many treatments are necessary? How long will the results last?
Ultherapy treatment plans depend upon the treatment area and the patient’s goals. Factors like age and skin quality also play a role. Dr. Cox will discuss your goals and create a treatment plan to best achieve them. Results typically last one to two years. Patients may opt for touch-up treatments as skin continues to age over time.
What can I expect during the procedure?
The length of the procedure depends on the areas being treated. A brow and neck treatment may take an hour or more. Décolletage treatment typically requires 30 minutes. Your treatment area or areas will be cleansed and applied with ultrasound gel. Your practitioner will then use the Ultherapy applicator to administer focused sound energy to the foundational layers of the skin. Patients may experience this sensation as warmth or heat, a deep vibration or tingling, or as pain or discomfort. Your provider will work with you to address any pain or anxiety and ensure that you are as comfortable as possible. No sedation is required during the procedure.
How long does recovery take?
Because this procedure in non-invasive, downtime is limited. Patients can go about their day after the procedure, although they may want to take it easy for the first 24 hours. Immediately after the procedure, most patients experience some redness and flushing. The most common side effects are slight swelling, bruising, tingling or tenderness to the touch. These issues are temporary and subside within two to three days. As with any medical procedure, there is the possibility for other rare effects, which your practitioner will review with you.
Is it safe?
Ultherapy is approved by the FDA to safely lift the skin. Ultrasound technology has been used medically for over 50 years, and has proven reliable and safe. Like any surgical or non-surgical procedure, there are risks associated. As an experienced practitioner of Ultherapy, Dr. Cox stresses the importance of finding an experienced physician.
Who is a good candidate?
Good candidates are those who are seeking a more youthful, lifted look without undergoing an invasive procedure. A trained physician will help you determine if you can benefit from Ultherapy. As with any procedure, good candidates are those who understand the procedure and post-treatment care, and have a realistic understanding of the results of the treatment.
How are lasers and Ultherapy different?
Lasers typically address issues in the superficial layers of the skin, such as fine lines, wrinkles and pigment changes. Ultherapy passes through these layers to work on the foundational layer of the skin. Ultherapy allows your physician to non-invasively see below the surface of the skin and target the same deep tissue that doctors could previously only access through surgical facelifts. By addressing the different issues of these very different skin layers, lasers and Ultherapy work in a complementary way.
