What is Radiesse?
Radiesse is a dermal filler that can be injected into the hands or face to restore volume.
How does it work?
Dermal fillers are injected in precise locations under the skin to add volume. Most dermal fillers we use in our practice are hyaluronic acid based. Radiesse is different in that it is comprised of calcium-based microspheres suspended in a water-based gel, which is ideal for use in the back of the hands. Radiesse works by producing an initial volumizing effect. Over time, the body absorbs the microspheres and gel, stimulating the production of collagen and producing a longer-lasting result.
What kind of results can I expect?
When used to treat the back of the hands, Radiesse adds volume that produces a more hydrated, youthful appearance. Radiesse treatment effectively reduces the look of veins and bony structures under the skin. Ongoing treatments are required to maintain results.
How many treatments are necessary? How long will results last?
Most patients are happy with one treatment, although some patients opt for an additional top-off treatment. Radiesse treatment lasts between six and twelve months.
What can I expect during the procedure?
During your appointment, Dr. Cox will begin by reviewing your treatment goals and the results you can expect. A series of injections will then be administered to the back of each hand to numb the area and ensure that you won’t feel any discomfort during the procedure. Dr. Cox will then strategically inject Radiesse into the back of your hands to best address your individual concerns. The injection areas will then be lightly massaged and gentle pressure will be applied to the back of the hands. The plumping effect of the treatment will be visible immediately. We will provide you with compression gloves to minimize the potential for excess swelling. The entire process typically takes less than 30 minutes.
How long does recovery take?
There is no true down time associated with Radiesse. You will be able to resume most normal activities after treatment. To reduce the possibility of excess swelling and bruising, we do advise patients to avoid exercise, alcohol and salty food for 48 hours after treatment. You can also minimize the extent of bruising and swelling by discontinuing the use of aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, fish oil and any other herbal supplements that thin the blood for two weeks prior to treatment.
As with any dermal filler, temporary swelling, redness, tenderness and bruising can occur. These side effects are typically mild and resolve within two weeks of treatment. An icepack can be used intermittently for the first hour after injection to reduce swelling and discomfort. Temporary lumpiness can occur and last up to two weeks after treatment.
If you do experience any bruising, we provide complimentary Vbeam laser treatment to accelerate the healing process.
Is it safe?
Radiesse is approved by the FDA for use in the back of the hands and areas of the face. It has a proven safety profile. Additionally, Radiesse is bio-synthetically produced, which means that no animals or animal products are used. This lowers your risk of an allergic reaction and no skin testing is required.
Like any injectable filler, there are risks associated with improper injection. For example, if dermal filler is injected into a blood vessel, potentially serious and permanent complications can occur. As an international trainer for filler treatment, Dr. Cox stresses the importance of finding an experienced injector with an intimate understanding of facial and hand anatomy.
Who is a good candidate?
Good candidates are women and men who wish to reduce the appearance of aging hands and improve the tone and texture of skin in the hands. As with any procedure, good candidates are those who understand the procedure and post-treatment care, and have a realistic understanding of the results of the treatment.
