What is MiraDry?
MiraDry is a minimally-invasive procedure that uses microwave energy to permanently destroy the glands that produce sweat and odor under the arms. MiraDry significantly reduces sweating under the arms.
How does it work?
MiraDry targets the glands under the arms that produce sweat and odor. The MiraDry hand-piece is applied to each underarm area, where it administers a proprietary microwave energy that targets and destroys sweat glands below the surface of the skin. This energy reaches a precise depth, and does not damage lymph nodes or other, deeper structures of the dermis. As it treats, the hand-piece simultaneously cools the top layers of the skin to prevent damage and discomfort.
What kind of results can I expect?
MiraDry permanently destroys sweat glands, which do not grow back. Patients report a 90% satisfaction rate following treatment. This means a significant reduction in sweat and odor under the arms, which takes effect immediately. This means that sweat no longer bleeds through clothing, anti-perspirant and deodorant products become unnecessary, and you’ll enjoy a drier, cleaner feeling.
The MiraDry treatment also causes a reduction in underarm hair. The FDA indicates that MiraDry treatment ultimately removes 60-70% of hair of all colors.
How many treatments are necessary and how long will the results last?
We now recommend one treatment to start. Advances in the MiraDry procedure mean that one treatment now reduces underarm sweating by an average of 82%. While heavier sweaters may prefer a second treatment, we now find that the majority of patients are happy with the results of just one treatment.
Results are permanent. Once sweat glands are destroyed, they do not grow back. Reduction of underarm hair is also permanent.
How should I prepare for the procedure?
To best prepare your skin for the procedure, you should shave your underarms four to six days before the treatment date. The morning of the procedure, you should not wear deodorant or antiperspirant. We prescribe Prednisone to be taken on the morning of the procedure to minimize inflammation and swelling. One hour before the procedure, we recommend taking two tablets of Aleve as an additional guard against inflammation and discomfort.
We suggest wearing a comfortable shirt with loose arm holes when you come to the office for treatment. During the procedure, women typically wear a tank top, sports bar or camisole. Men wear a tank top or may opt to wear no shirt.
What can I expect during the procedure?
Our nurse practitioner Karlee Wagoner specializes in MiraDry treatments, and was selected by MiraDry’s manufacturer to appear in a webinar about MiraDry at our practice. Karlee has been working with Dr. Cox for over 15 years, and is an expert in the treatment of hyperhidrosis. During treatment, you will lie comfortably on your back with your hands under your head, to expose the underarm area for treatment. Karlee will apply a treatment guide to each underarm area, followed a tumescent administration of lidocaine to numb the area. Patients typically report that this is the most (and only) somewhat painful part of the procedure. The lidocaine will prevent you from feeling any discomfort during the next part of the procedure.
Next, Karlee will apply the MiraDry hand-piece to each underarm. The hand-piece delivers energy that targets and destroys sweat glands non-invasively. You should not feel any discomfort during this portion of the procedure. The entire procedure takes about an hour.
How long does recovery take?
Downtime for the procedure is limited. Patients can expect redness, swelling and tenderness following the procedure, which will reduce significantly in the first few days after the procedure. Residual swelling may take up to three months to resolve completely. This swelling can be significantly minimized by icing the area within the first 24 hours after treatment. For this reason, we recommend that patients go home after treatment so that they can ice their underarms comfortably. Most patients return to normal activities the next day, but we do recommend taking a break from rigorous activities for several days after the procedure.
Is it safe?
MiraDry is approved by the FDA to safely treat hyperhidrosis under the arms. It has been performed on thousands of patients around the world, and has an excellent safety record. Karlee is an expert in this procedure and performs it frequently. The microwave technology used is a safe, non-ionizing radiation that is not associated with any other risks.
Don’t I need my sweat glands?
The body contains over 4 million sweat glands, only 2% of which are located under the arms. Disabling these sweat glands is uniquely effective in reducing the problems associated with excess sweating, but does not compromise the body’s ability to effectively cool itself.
Who is a good candidate?
We define excess sweating by the extent that it disrupts your life. You may be a good candidate for MiraDry if you find that sweaty outbreaks and damp, stained clothing interfere with your daily life. MiraDry can be a excellent solution if your sweating is not controlled by antiperspirants, or if you’d like to live more naturally without the use of antiperspirants. A consultation is required to determine if you could benefit from MiraDry.
