What is Kybella?
How does it work?
Kybella targets excessive “submental” fat, commonly referred to as “double chin.” It is comprised of deoxycholic acid, a molecule that occurs naturally in the body and aids in the breakdown and absorption of fat. Once injected, Kybella destroys the fat cells present under the chin. The body then naturally removes the cells, and the treated areas are prevented from accumulating or storing fat in the future.
What kind of results can I expect?
Dr. Cox conducted the clinical trials for Kybella, and went on to conduct post-trial research to further consider patient satisfaction and evaluate treatment with additional factors. She found that one treatment of Kybella often produces surprisingly good results. In clinical trials, patients were offered up to six Kybella treatments. While a few patients opted for three treatments, the majority were happy with their results after one or two treatments.
How long will the results last?
Results are long lasting. Once fat cells from the chin are gone, this area is not likely to return to it’s pre-procedure appearance.
How many treatments are necessary?
The majority of our patients are happy with one to two treatments, although some opt for three or more in the presence of a significant double chin. We like to schedule appointments eight weeks apart.
What can I expect during the procedure?
During each treatment session, Dr. Cox will mark the specific areas under your chin where the Kybella injections will be placed. A series of injections will then be administered. The area will then be lightly massaged. We apply ice packs to reduce swelling and discomfort. The entire process typically takes less than 30 minutes.
How long does recovery take?
Because the procedure is minimally invasive, downtime is very limited. May experience mild discomfort during the procedure. After the procedure, you may experience minor and temporary side effects such as swelling, bruising, pain and numbness at the injection sites. Depending on the treatment, the patient may experience a significant amount of swelling for the first 48 hours, and may prefer to take a day or two off. Results usually become visible during the first month, with maximal results usually visible by the third month.
Is it safe?
Kybella is approved by the FDA for use under the chin and has a proven safety profile. Like any injectable, there are risks associated with improper injections. For example, if Kybella is injected into the mandibular nerve, complications can occur. As an international trainer for Kybella treatment, Dr. Cox stresses the importance of finding an experienced injector with an intimate understanding of facial anatomy.
Who is a good candidate?
A good candidate has fat under their chin that they would like to remove without undergoing an invasive procedure. A consultation with an experienced physician will determine if Kybella can address your concerns. Kybella does not treat sagging skin or loss of tone under the chin.
What if I gain a significant amount of weight after the procedure?
