GLOSSARY OF COMMON TERMS AND TECHNIQUES

Botox® - Botox, the brand name of botulinum toxin type A, is a safe drug used to temporarily prevent muscle contraction that causes lines and wrinkles. It smoothes frown lines between the brows, forehead, eyes and mouth, It is also effective for treatment of hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating of the hands, feet and underarms. The effects of Botox last from two to five months, then the injection must be repeated.

Chemical Peels - Chemical peeling is a technique used to rejuvenate and improve the appearance of the skin. With this treatment, a chemical solution is applied to the skin, which causes the surface layers to separate and eventually peel off. The new rejuvenated skin is usually smoother with improvement of the color and texture. Restore wrinkled, blemished, unevenly pigmented, or sun-damaged facial skin, using a chemical solution to peel away skin's top layers. Works best on fair, thin skin with superficial wrinkles.

Endoscopic Brow lift - An endoscopic brow lift is a procedure where four small incisions are placed within the hair itself. Through these incisions, the tissues of the brow and scalp are elevated. By using sutures, the brows may be carefully shaped and repositioned in order to rejuvenate the upper eyelids and to eliminate wrinkling of the brow itself.

Endoscopic Facelift - A type of facelift that uses much smaller incisions than a regular facelift. With this procedure, the endoscope is used to dissect and reposition the fat pad of the cheeks. This lifts the middle part of the face and softens the nasolabial fold.

Injectable Fillers - Soft tissue fillers are injected into the skin to fill depressed areas such as nasal labial folds, acne scars and other areas. They are also widely used to enhance lip fullness.

IPL/Intense Pulse Light - The latest advancement in photo rejuvenation therapies. Safely improves hyperpigmentation, brown spots, redness associated with rosacea, broken capillaries and brown pigment due to sun damage to the neck and chest, also known as Poikeloderma of Civatte. IPL also stimulates collagen to improve firmness and texture, restoring a more youthful look with “no downtime.” This treatment requires multiple sessions.

Laser Treatments - Using the most advanced laser technology, laser treatments gently and quickly remove the paper-thin outer layer of skin, the epidermis, with pinpoint accuracy. The skin contracts and tightens as the laser vaporizes the water in the tissue. The old skin is then wiped away, leaving the new skin underneath to develop and regenerate. The laser also tightens and shrinks the collagen in the skin.
  • Q Switched Yag Laser - This laser is used to remove brown spots and tattoos. Treatment is usually performed every 8 weeks for tattoo removal. Requires multiple treatments. Consultation is required with a physician.
  • Gentle Lase/Gentle Yag - Gentle Lase and Gentle Yag Hair Removal, a technological breakthrough to remove unwanted facial and body hair. Requires multiple treatments.
  • Yag Laser Vein Removal - This laser treats leg veins such as Spider and Varicose veins.
  • Vbeam/Pulsed Dye Laser - This laser is widely used to treat Rosacea, Angiomas, blood vessels, Port Wine Stain Birthmarks and Warts.
  • Smooth Beam - This laser thickens the collagen layers of the skin, decreasing fine lines and plumping acne scars. It is an FDA-approved treatment of acne.

Liposuction - Liposuction is a surgical technique that may improve the body's contour by removing unwanted deposits of fat located between the skin and the muscle. Liposuction involves the use of small, straw-like instruments called cannulas that is attached to a suction machine. The cannula is inserted through tiny skin incisions, creating a network of tunnels through the fat and suctioning out the unwanted fatty deposits.

Tumescent Liposuction - The tumescent technique is a relatively new liposuction method that can reduce postoperative bruising, swelling and pain. Areas of excess fat are injected with a large amount of anesthetic liquid before liposuction is performed. The liquid causes the compartments of fat to become swollen and firm or "tumesced." The expanded fat compartments allow the liposuction cannula to travel smoothly beneath the skin as the fat is removed.

Microdermabrasion - Microdermabrasion is a treatment where very fine crystals of aluminum oxide are sprayed onto the skin under pressure and vacuumed back at a fraction of a second. This leads to removal of the superficial skin layer, without damaging the integrity of the skin.

Sclerotherapy (vein removal) - Sclerotherapy is a technique used to treat varicose veins and spider veins by injecting the vein with an agent called a sclerosant. The sclerosant affects the vein lining, causing its destruction. The sclerosant is injected with a very small needle into the spider or varicose vein. The vein hardens and is absorbed by the body.
