What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a simple exfoliating treatment that makes skin softer, smoother and more radiant.
How does it work?
Dermaplaning is performed by carefully exfoliating the outermost layer of the skin with a sterile blade. The process “shaves off” dead skin as well as the soft light-colored “vellus” hairs of the upper lip, cheeks and sides of the face.
What kind of results can I expect?
The removal of dead skin and facial hair reveals skin that is noticeably soft and more radiant. It may also allow skin care products to penetrate deeper and more effectively into the skin. This treatment is a favorite of professionals in the entertainment industry because it leaves skin looking fresh and provides a smooth surface for makeup application. The results are comparable to other forms of exfoliation, with the added benefit of hair removal.
How long will the results last? How many treatments are necessary?
Patients will see fresher, more radiant skin after their first treatment. Results are most visible in the days immediately after treatment. The skin returns to its baseline state as the dermal growth cycle progresses, which typically takes 21 days. Some patients opt for recurring treatment every three to four weeks to maintain results, while others enjoy the treatment to prepare for a special event. Patients are sometimes concerned removing facial hair will cause it to grow back darker or thicker. Fortunately, this is an old wive’s tale. Dermaplaning will never cause facial hair to increase or darken.
What can I expect during the procedure?
Dermaplaning is performed by a trained Aesthetician under the medical direction of Dr. Sue Ellen Cox. You will recline comfortably as your Aesthetician cleanses your skin and then You carefully and gently moves a sterile scalpel across the treatment areas. Patients typically compare the sensation to shaving their legs. You should not expect to feel any pain or discomfort.
How long does recovery take?
There is no downtime associated with dermaplaning. Immediately after the procedure, your skin may appear pinker than normal, but this typically resolves within a few hours of treatment. Your skin will look and feel noticeably smoother and more radiant.
Is it safe?
In the hands of a trained Aesthetician, dermaplaning is a very safe procedure. This process of exfoliation works like other kinds of shaving and can be performed on any skin type.
Will dermaplaning cause hair to grow back darker or thicker?
Dermaplaning will never cause hair to increase or darken. Hair growth and quality is determined by a number of factors which are unaffected by shaving and other forms of exfoliation. If you are bothered by darker hair, you may be a good candidate for laser hair removal, which produces a permanent reduction of hair.
Who is a good candidate?
Good candidates are those seeking smoother, more radiant skin and a temporary reduction of facial hair. Dermaplaning can be performed on any skin type, but is not recommended for those with active acne breakouts or cold sores. As with any procedure, good candidates are those who understand the procedure and have realistic expectations for results of the treatment.
