What is the Alex Trivantage Laser?
The Alex Trivantage Laser treats brown spots associated with aging and sun damage. It also treats certain kinds of birthmarks and can be used to remove tattoos.
How does it work? What kind of results can I expect?
The Alex Trivantage Laser emits focused light energy via an alexandrite crystal. As the light passes through the alexandrite crystal, a beam of light 755 nm long is produced. This light selectively targets pigmented areas with light, causing them to break up and fade away. The Alex Trivantage laser reduces the appearance of brown spots from sun damage as well as tattoos composed of black, blue and green pigment.
How many treatments are necessary? How long will results last?
Treatment plans differ for patients seeking to reduce the appearance of brown spots versus tattoos.
Many patients are happy with one Alex Trivantage Laser treatment for smaller brown spots. Larger brown spots may require a series of treatment. Once treated and healed, these spots do not return. However, if you are prone to acquiring brown spots, new ones may form. To reduce the appearance of new spots, it is essential to avoid sun exposure and always wear sunscreen and protective clothing when you spend time in the sun.
Tattoo treatment varies by tattoo size, age, color, type and depth of pigment. Once removed, the results are permanent. Multiple sessions spaced about eight weeks apart are typically required for optimal results. As few as five, or as many as twenty treatments may be required. An evaluation with our experts will determine the best treatment plan for your tattoo.
What can I expect during the procedure?
Alexandrite Laser treatment is well tolerated. We first provide all patients with eye protection to shield the eyes from laser exposure. Your provider will then begin the laser treatment. The procedure itself typically takes less than 15 minutes. Patients report a sensation of heat, accompanied by a bright light, and may experience mild discomfort. We often describe the sensation as similar to the snap of a rubber band against the skin.
How long does recovery take?
There is no real downtime associated with Alex Trivantage Laser treatment. Redness, mild swelling and itching immediately after the procedure may occur and last a few days after treatment. In most cases, you will be able to continue your day as normal. For tattoos and larger dark spots, we will apply a bandage to the area. The treated areas will take on a “baked potato” look as it scabs over. When the scab falls off, the area underneath will be red or pink, and sensitive for up to a week. In order to avoid unintended scarring, it is essential not to pick at the scab or wash the area too vigorously. It may take up to six weeks for the treated area to fully heal. During this time, it is important to protect the area from sun exposure or other irritation.
Is it safe?
The FDA has approved the Alexandrite Laser to safely treat a number of issues related to skin redness. It has an excellent safety profile. Like any medical procedure, there are risks to be considered. As a trainer of other physicians in laser procedures, Dr. Cox stresses the importance of finding an experienced provider who understands the finer points, and will work with you to provide and objective and factual assessment of what to expect.
Who is a good candidate?
Good candidates for the Alex Trivantage Laser are women and men who are bothered by certain kinds of brown spots or unwanted tattoos. Our team will meet with you to determine if you could benefit from Alex Trivantage Laser treatment. As with any procedure, good candidates are those who understand the procedure and post-treatment care, and have a realistic understanding of the results of the treatment.
